Science as “boringology”
The word "boringology" is coined by journalists of UK popular science magazine New Scientist. The point they want to make here is that observations or researches that seem to be boring can acturally be very meaningful and exciting. Science, and many other crafts that demand devotedness are all similar in this. You can really feel bored if you are not paying your effort in it! The pleasure from science lies in questioning, pondering and discovering.

Fallout 的台词说得好:“War, wars never change"。
Braveheart
Press on!
Live intuitively and actively.

Open or expose mind?

The US federal judge just announced that teaching "Intelligent Design" theory in schools in Pennsylvania is a violation of the Constitution.
"Intelligent Design" as an opponent of Darwinism in explaining evolution has been supported by the church. It argues that lives are too complicated to be created "by chance". Penn's teaching ID in school is considered as trying to mix church and state, thus a violation of US Constitution.
The proponents of ID argue that ID as well as Darwinism are all theories cannot be proved true or false, schools should teach the pupils both theories so as to make them 'open minded'.
Here comes an interesting problem: we all accept that science is open and can accept argument. Theories can be proven wrong no matter how prominent and popular it has been. Then can we teach the next generation an alternative theory which is not accepted by most people and could very possibly be wrong? To what extent can a state choose a theory and announce others as wrong? Here we can see that the state can well interfere arguments between theories, though the argument is mainly within scientific field and the result cannot be altered by government orders.
I do not really believe teaching ID to primary school students can make their mind open. At most, they will accept another kind of view on evolution and follow that all their lives. They may be too young to be critical.
I myself support DARWINISM as I do not want an 'architect' above us. Though, argument in the academic areas should be allowed and encouraged.

Dr. Field.
12月16日,她要回意大利过圣诞了,"See you next year"。

We didn’t get the contract!
In today's meeting, we, the NU Consultants, did not get the bid for the Peak District National Park Monitoring plan.
All people in the team have invested a lot in this project. Vicky contributed a lot of brilliant ideas, Jenny and Val worked hard to make the presentation attractive. I read a lot of backgrounds and did a lot of note taking.
But Livia's group got the 'check'. They won because their plan are more practical (though I don't think it is half as innovative as ours). We lost the bid maybe because that we had too little about budget.
Congratulations to Livia and her colleagues. We will try to fight back in the future.
Though it is not real bidding, but I won't say it is "just a simulation" because the winner won't say so, neither do I. Hopefully we will have a analysis of the performance this friday.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS: The Nexus: Where Science Meets Society
This title is of high interest to me because it is the problem we often encounter in Environmental Mangement. Ms. Jackson's address, though highly US-centrism, did reveal some perspectives and insights on science and the society.
The article starts with a retrospective view of the role of science in the history of human development. Then it identified several trends in the recent decades: multidisciplinary, globalization (and national security), decline of workforce and educated scientists, multiple voices or information overload. Scientific innovasion has a better prospect today than any time before, but the challenges of the trends must be answered. More investment on research and education, and more consideration on attract, nourish and raise talents, to ensure national security and interest in the new century.
This is applicable to other countries. However, what strikes me most is that in this information age, voices are easily drown in the turbulent ocean of information. A scientist today face the crisis that his opinions may not be heard and accepted as easily as 30 years ago. Science must address this difficulty to make sure people get valuable information. Or the value of science is lost in such a "Nexus" of interweaving interests and information. It could be replaced by badly proved information which can direct the society to a worse direction. (Though science itself is not necessarily good and correct, most of the time it is helpful in informing policies.)
It is unavoidable that scientists are more likely to 'encounter' the society today because of their research and the interaction of scientific and lay people. The trend calls for science that is more holistic, flexible, adaptable, informing and trustable.

(Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy et al. 2002 Environmental Sustainability Index. 2002.)

The outcomes of Montreal 2005 COP/MOP
The curtain finally falls after two weeks of negotiation. Though the Independent critisized that there is too much more talk than action, from Friday night to Saturday night delegates from 157 countries finally made some progress in achieving an agreement on further reduction of GHG after 2012. In addition, the mechanism of compensating tropical forest conserving countries was also established in this conference. The total outcome seems not to be too bad.
The US still rejects the idea of global action to reduce carbon dioxide. They say they have spend $3bn on technologies that reduce emission and that was their effort. But Former President Mr. Clinton's speech apparently played a subtle role in the progress. This morning it is reported that US may have an agreement with other countries on further negotiation, after the impolite demostration of walking out the conference earlier yesterday.
This delegates also agreed on the scheme of auditing emission and a rule book making the Kyoto Protocal operational. The next step would be put all these into action. As Clinton said, 40 years later we could end up on a raft somewhere if we do nothing now.

Witness history — or become history?
Yesterday there was large scale demonstration in London, Montreal, Washington and cities in other 30 countries. Over 100,000 people took part in it. The demonstration was timed to press the US and UK government to set effective agenda on cutting GHG emission.
As Margaret Beckett, the Secretary of State for the Environment said, the conference in Montreal is not very possible to achieve more than making the issue forward. Not much consensus can be achieved with the attitude of US government. The developing countries are doing something to cut CO2 emission. Now we must wait and see how US response.
The prospect is not optimistic. The change of global climate is at a speed faster than scientists predicted. Therefore this year's demonstration will be of historical meaning, no matter if it can push the US government forward in controlling GHG emission. Luckily the people's attitude has changed a lot since the Katrina disaster. Therefore perhaps we can expect an attitude change of the US government, too.
About UK PM Mr. Blair, I support his approving attitude on the issue of nuclear power -- at least it can solve the most urgent problem, and solution of nuclear waste disposal can be better expected than other low GHG emission energy sources. To what direction will he push Mr. Bush will possibly determine the coming days of mankind.

Could be some fruit from Montreal
The proposal by Papua New Guinea and other 9 countries is endorsed by Stiglitz and is widely praised. Seems Brazil is going to turn that into reality soon.
The pricing is adequate? At least it is practical. The price may change in the future. The important thing is to start the first step.

The good and the bad news about climate change
The Good:
An innovative proposal could become real and bring back rainforests.
The Inuits find that not only species they depend on are disappearing, the land, the house and themselves are endangered by climate change. Almost half the earth away, Tuvalu people are losing their island right under their feet. They are moving to New Zealand.
Climate change 'will dry Africa'
It is said that this Saturday people will hit the street calling for firm legislation on CO2 quota and reduction schedule. It could be an epic but also very sad scene.

The Constant Gardener
倒是最后的旁白 "How cheaply can life be bought" 确实发人深省。

The Opening of COP 11 and COP/MOP 1, Montreal
Today is the opening day of the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention.
It could be a "historical event" because it is the first meeting of Parties to UNFCCC after Kyoto Protocal enter into force in February this year. However, the importance of the conference depends on its outcome. The attitudes of the US and 'big' developing countries, such as China, could well determine the result of this conference. A constructive result would be a better enforced reduction target than Kyoto, or the solution to debates between developed countries and LDCs. However, both of them would be too difficult to achieve before next protocol after Kyoto. It is helpful if they can proceed one step toward that in this conference.
Dispute is unavoidable. Some countries have already raised the problem of payback for conservation of rainforests in the first day's discussion. The problem is how we face and tackle with disputes. It is impossible to satisfy everyone. Compromising to everyone is not necessarily beneficial to all parties. It is ideal if all countries can consider holistically for the whole earth and mankind. Unfortunately, it is national interest often put before those.
Richard Kinley, Officer-in-Charge,UNFCCC states that:
"2005 has emerged as a remarkable year for international climate change policy. The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol in February opened a new phase in international efforts to protect the global climate. The first ever meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol will open shortly, marking a formal start of work under the treaty."
Yes, but 2005 also saw the sign of end of fossil fuel, two horrible hurricanes, drought and flood all over the world. It could be too important if nothing is really done in this conference -- end of normal climate.

United Nations Climate Change Conference in Montreal
This would be the first conference of CCC after the Kyoto Protocol come into effect. This conference will discuss about issues of Developing countries' role in fighting climate change. What is also interesting is US and UK's attitude. The conference will begin in 28 Nov, I will try to track the progress.

UK wins European battle over emissions
But lose the battle against CO2 emission technically....
This is an example of how EC, ECJ and UK interact in the implementation of emission quota scheme and trade system. In order to make the policy success to most countries, ECJ agreed that the UK claim for increasing quota is necessary.
Hope this trade between ECJ and UK would ultimately bring the environment something good...better enforced quota system, for example.

Dissertation Idea 3
It looks quite attractive. I just don't know if it is 'original' and 'innovative' enough.
Basically it is about modeling the niche of invasive species and predicting their distribution. Using GIS you can even change some parameters to simulate environment changes and find the possible response of invaded ecosystem. But a lot of people had already done this....

Dissertation Idea 2
Only some very vague ideas so far. It is about invasive species.
It is known that in Peak District there are some species are under the threat of alien species. For example water vole predated by mink. An article discussed the possibility to predict invasion by niche analysis.
Or, it is possible to look to the trees planted by forestry sectors, see how they affect local moorland or bog.
Tomorrow I will go to check out the list of invasive species in UK. See what I can do on this.

Professor Careless?

Dissertation Idea 1
Organic Farm vs. Conventional (inorganic) farm.
The first thought is to compare their productivity and biodiversity, but, if you search "Organic Farming" with Google, you will get an article at the second rank on this topic. Therefore if I want to be original, I have to choose another topic.
Another title I can think of now is organic farm vs. conventional farm in carbon dioxide consolidation and emission. But this will need a comprehensive understanding of farming processes on both types of farm. To make it simple, maybe I shouldn't consider the crops on farm because their fate is too complex. Maybe I shall focus on the process on these farms. Again, data sources would be a big problem, because I don't have time to collect data for a whole year.

Climate Change - negative
Yesterday I talked with Prof. Michael D. Steven, who is working on Climage Change in School of Geography. He told me that there is little I can do in a three-month dissertation on climate change, which is too complex and require long timescale research. On the ecosystem response, it is always changing and a lot of anthropogenic impacts other than climate change are influencing it. Thus it is very hard too.
He suggested that I can do something on air pollution, which is relatively easy and cheap to study. Or, urban warm-island, but that would require a car and I need to do the monitoring in the midnight.... Another option is to take part in his experiment on carbon dioxide. Seems among the three the last one is the most possible to succeed.
I need other information to decide what problem I should study in my dissertation.

Designing a monitoring programme for Peak District National Park
The purposes of the National Park are: a. to preserve natural beauty and historical value; b. to provide recreation and enjoyment to the public. Our aim is to understand how well does the Peak District National Park meet these two purposes, and achieve sustainable development, through monitoring some indicators.
In my opinion, we can consider sustainable development in two aspects: sustainability and development. They are two sides of a coin. In sustainability assessment, the pressures, our response and effects should be identified and measured. In development assessment the growth of economy and society, living standard and benefits received by the community should be measured.
The topics concerned can be sorted in these two categories. From the structure plan of Peak District, we can obtain the aspects concerned, key areas and measures to be taken. What we need further are general principles of measuring sustainability, existing monitoring programmes and measurement methods, e.g. framework, indicator sets and models.
In the stucture plan there are a number of chapters, each concentrate on a topic. They may be considered as key concerns on sustainable development. They are: conservatioin, housing, shops, services and community facilities, economy, recreation and tourism, utilities, minerals, waste management, transport, and the centre town in the District: Bakewell.
In each chapter some issues are identified. This issues may give us directions on what indicators and measurements are needed. For example, issues in conservation include: development in the countryside; development in the towns, villages and conservation areas; farming and forestry; buildings, wildlife, sites and features of heritage or landscape importance; environment enhancement and improvement; pollution and disturbance; development on unstable or contaminated land; energy; rivers, water courses and flood defence.
There are also survey reports to look at. In Rural White Paper and This Common Heritage some national indicators are given.

Choosing topic for my dissertation
Though it is half a year away, but I should make more preparation. Besides, this may help my application.
Now there are three options.
1. Find a local conservation group and see what I can do for them.
2. Join Operation Wallacea's expedition, to remote countries and get data, then finish my dissertation. Some fund raising is necessary.
3. Work with UKCIP, it is related to climate change and could help my application and further study.
I am seeking information on them. But I have to be fast if I am really going to work on climate change.

A talk with my tutor
On wednesday I had a talk with my tutor, Prof. Roy Haines-Young. The talk was mainly about 3 topics: information flood, choosing topics for my dissertation and future career.
About information flood, there do not seem to be many handy solutions, a diary and a year planner is still the best choice.
The choice of topic for my dissertation, can be linked to conservation group's ongoing activities. I can write them letter to see if they have any problems need my help as an Environmental Management student. They seldom present their problems on the web or publications, but it is said that their will be many job vacancies. Of course, many students want to link their dissertation with such actural projects, so I may need my tutor's help when writing applications.
About my further study and work, it is said that my career prospect is very bright. People with understanding of both Oriental and Western culture and environmental expertise will be of great need in the near future because China is developing rapidly and many foreign companies hoping to enter China market would need such people to deal with environmental concerns.

How to avoid a gloomy, hot future?
We have no direct proof that the global climate is becoming warmer, because of the nature of science. We cannot 'prove' anything, but can only 'disprove' something. Therefore we cannot assert that the temperature is rising from recent years' measures. However, it is highly probable that this year's unusually frequent hurricanes and floods are due to climate change.
To one not so optimistic (i.e. me), what happened in 2005 could hint those scene in those movies like Mad Max, Water World, and A. I.. The end of fossil fuel production is not very far. Global warming is influencing everyone.
Is it really happening? I think, yes. If we do nothing.
A G8 plus meeting is being held in London in these days. British PM Blair chose climate change and countermeasure as a central topic. He is quite right. No matter what intention he has. G. Bush is talking about technology saving the world from greenhouse gas. Blair seems recognise that science can tackle global warming. But if no protocol is given, who will use the technology to control emission? Tech costs money. And people do not want to lose money unless it is asked by law or policy.
The European effort on controlling GHG emission would serve as a critical example. If it is not successful enough, developing countries such as China will not be on board (maybe a Chinese version Katrina will change policy makers' mind). Unfortunately, in the last 2 years the carbon dioxide emission in UK has rised, possibly due to gas shortage and changing back to coal in power generation. It is difficult to reach the limit set by Kyoto Protocol before 2012.
So, China and other rapid developing countries' attitude must be ensured. We hope that no matter how well EC did, all countries will be able to work together to fight global warming and solve energy problem. Even if you are really lucky, you have prosperous economy, and only other countries suffer from the GHG you emitted, you will soon find this all meaningless because other countries are collapsing and no one would buy your products and services. This is globalisation. We all bear the same fate. It depends on our action.

Some Gossips on Greenpeace
This radical environmentalist organisation is recently making its interesting public image.
Raid left me fearing for life, says Mrs Prescott
To act like ninjas, I think, cannot raise public awareness of energy issues. Well, unless they are ninjas reported by the media.
Greenpeace ship strikes coral reef
Luckily, the action of both parties are fast and understanding. It is really only gossip. Greenpeace did good in their tour and this incident.

[Academic] The process of essay writing
Today I had my first Center of English Language Education (CELE, DO NOT PRONOUNCE IT, please!) course. I found it very useful. Unfortunately, that means I have to modify most of my essays, even change them foundamentally.
The marker/reader of your essay will judge your work from such aspects: relevance; understanding of the problem; evidence of reading; critical analysis of reading; awareness of differences of opinion between sources; ability to interpret and synthesis sources; ability to evaluate different views/solutions/etc.; ability to provide support in the form of examples, data, etc.
When doing reading, you should note down the sources, read critically and note your own responses, try to adapt your ideas as you go on.
Before writing, it is very important that you analyse the given question, make sure you know what does the assignment ask you to do. Bear in mind that all that you read should be relevant to the problem.
When writing, first write the body draft, then introduction and conclusion. Again, all the sections should be relevant to the title.
After finished writing, check if all text build towards conclusion; check if the discussion is sufficient; check if you have referred to all the sources; check if you followed the convention of layout. Do a few times of proofread to make sure you have correct content, language and grammar. Focus on one problem in one proofreading session.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | EU offers to slash farm subsidies
The EU has demolised trade barriers within its boundary. Now, maybe it is also trying to lower trade barrier to the outside world.
The EU offers to cut its subsidiary to agriculture products export by at most 60%. To fair trade advocators, this is very good news. EU spokesman says that farmers from some poor countries are suffering from US and EU cheap agriculture exports. Therefore they want to change this.
French do not like this decision. This is imaginable. They have a very supportive agriculture and farmers are important political force. This policy may also bring economic loss to UK farmers because UK farming is heavily depending on subsidiary. However, from a environmental aspect, this policy can surely cut excessive agriculture production and make more diversified agriculture economy pattern.

Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | Wild herds may stampede across Britain under plan for huge reserves
This piece of news can be considered as (1) the sign of a more integrated European conservation framework and (2) a more aggresive step of UK agriculture reform and re-wild of its land.
Most of the land involved in this proposal is land with marginally farming economic value. Therefore it should not pose threat to the country's crop yield. However, there are still people living on the land. The future reserve area will not allow premanent accommodation (the statement here is not clear yet). Therefore some people will need to move. If they choose to continue farming, this could influence other farmers at their immigration destination.
Some new species will be able to enter UK after they extincted in this country due to human activities. Thanks to transbound conservation scheme. However, it remains questioned that whether these species would threat local landscape and species. After all, they have vanished in the wild for up to 800 years, and much of UK landscape is formed in recent 300 years.
Another problem may be the former use of land in the to-be reserves. Is it contaminated? Or too close to human settlements? An EIA should be carried out not only for local farming ecosystem and settlement, but also for the species coming in.
On politics, this proposal will help UK establish a more ecology-active nation image. No doubt that other EU countries will praise and imitate this action. At least this is good for those species which will enter UK.

Live actively, and you will have an active life.

[Academic] Sustainability Indicators
In recent case study on Sustainable Indicators, I found Chinese way of implementing Sustainable Development is quite different from that of EU's. In Britain there is already a framework of Sustainability Indicators. But in China, there are only void concepts, reports and proposals. Very little practical work is done. This is disappointing, indeed. The idea of Sustainability Indicators is controversial. It is a reductionist way of assessing complex systems. When simplifying complex relationships between elements some information could be ignored. The interpretation of SIs may also be subjective. However, so far simplication is the best approach we have to assess complex systems. We have enough data for calculating a index indicating the system's state, driver and response. Therefore we can probably just try using simplication, discover problems in using the indicator set, and improve it. I do not think that Chinese policy makers should try to make a perfect framework of SIs, they should get down to work ASAP, set up a initial SI set and see what is its problem.

Some findings after the field trip
I just come back from a field trip organised by the school of geography. It is not very tiring physically, but you really get a lot of information and much to think about.
It is about conservation. The conservation of the whole landscape, both natural and cultural. You should consider local agencies, farmers, tourists, ecosystems and so on. Perfect conservation satisfying everyone may not exist but one that makes more satisfied may be better.
The Peak District is formed both by nature and human activities. It is representing a different concept of National Park. From very early on, the landscape there is changed and managed by man. Therefore you cannot just put things you think natural there. You must conserve human management style in that area.
The purpose of your conservation should be make the park sustainable in providing interested features and opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment. Human factors should be considered when making plans.

The crisis and trial of free software
Before I never realized that free softwares are in such a hard circumstance. Only after I heard Richard M. Stallman's speech, and had some experience in using GNU/Linux, did I realize that many people just do not understand the meaning of free software, free spirit, free as in freedom.
Many people just mixed free software concept with OpenSource. In fact, they are very different. RMS says that OpenSource does not have enough emphasis on freedom. He is not being paranoid on words. There are software opensource but not free. Redhat Linux, Redflag Linux are just some appropriate examples.
Therefore, a urgent mission for Free Software Foundation is to tell people the real meaning of software freedom. And tell them just opening source is not enough.

Book Disappointment
I spent most of the time today in reading books on my reading list. Unfortunately, I found two of them really boring. One is "Environmental Ethics", the language in the book is just confusing and very fragged. Or, it maybe because I read that book in the cafe instead of a quieter place. However, I think it is very poorly written.
Another book, written by my school's professor, on my favourite subject -- ecology, is also a miserable work. I didn't know anyone who can write a book on plant ecology in such dull way. What I saw in this book is just lists of Latin names of plants, not a bit of the relationship, interaction or energy/info flow between them and the environment. The way he teaches is not very good, either. Gee, but I think I still need to stick on. For my scientific interest.

[Academic] My perceptions of Environmental Management, so far
The definition of Environmental Management is difficult to
give. Because it is too wide and still evolving. Basically,
it is about discover or forecast environmental problems and
use political, economic or ethic methods as well as
scientific theory and practise to solve them, in order to
avoid environmental impacts brought along by projects or
other human activities and improve human well-being.
EM aspect means stewardship, multidisciplinary, practising.
It is based on broad-view, long term and gap-free (if
possible) monitoring. Because environment and social
continuously changes, EM should be flexible, adaptive and
perceptive.
The means that EM usually uses to modify ethics towards a
more pro-environmental way are:
- Advisory
- Economic or fiscal
- Regulatory
For EM, most of the times there are no enough time waiting
for solid proofs. Modelling, simulation and forecasts are
very often used in EM practise.
Don't forget that the ultimate pursuance of EM is to avoid
environmental impact instead of merely manage a project or
tackle with certain environment problem.

My first day in UK
I arrived in London at Heathrow Airport at 19:06, September 20th, local time. The first thing I need to do -- passing the custom -- taught me what is British custom. That is queuing. All passengers from my flight all lined up, waiting for being certified to enter the country. After I got out the airport, it's already 20:15. The left-side traffic outside in the street is very confusing. Luckily I managed to get to National Express' ticket office in one piece. Then to my disappointment, the next coach to Nottingham will go at 22:35, that means when I get to Nott It will be late midnight. 1:30 AM, I am at Broadmarsh Bus Stop, Nottingham. There were a few Asian-look people around. I caught up with two of them. They are second year here, Malaysians. We shared a cab and I arrived in Broadgate Park. But the reception told me that I couldn't move in till 24th? 2:30 AM, with the reception's help I come to Cripps hall. They find me a room. It's small but nice. At 3 in the morning I can finally put myself in bed. Wait, it's 10 in Beijing! I don't think I will have jet lag any more. I just wanted a sound sleep.

Leaving the City of Beijing
A few hours later, I will be on the flight to Munich, then go to London.
Just now when I was going to have dinner, an idea poped up in my mind. To many people I saw last night, it could be their last sight of me. I may not come back till 4 to 5 years later, then many of their will also leave this university even this city. It would be difficult to get together again.
Anyway, you cannot always stay at a same place. Everything is changing. Only with departing, gathering is meaningful. Let me just consider this departure as the beginning of next time's reunion.
Tomorrow would be a little hard. I will get to London at Beijing time 3:15 AM then I have to catch a bus to Nottingham.

Richard M. Stallman

Departure time closes
This afternoon I finally got the unconditional offer from the University of Nottingham. Another uncertainty is eliminated. Next, I must begin packaging.
My father and mother invited some of their friends to dinner today. I do not like being with them because I have not seen them for at least 8 years. How can I be easy with such strange fellows? However, there is a girl going to take college entrance examination next year, so I tried to give her some advice. Only after I got home I found that her father gave me 1000 yuan as a present. Gee, too polite.
I find a web community focused on book/movie/music appreciation and comment, named douban. Looking good. Maybe I can contribute something to it. Also I start to pay some attention to writing wikipedia entries.
Maybe I invested too much time on surfing the net. I find myself not like reading recently. There should be self-control and change of lifestyle.

‘War of the Worlds’: New twig in an old tree

I just went to the cinema today for this movie. I must say for the thrill it gives in two hours, the price of ticket is worthy. Though people may be disappointed that Spielberg made another snack-like movie, I think, after he gained fame by 'Schindler's list' 'Purple' and 'Saving Private Ryan', now is the time he come back as a SF movie director who choose titles he likes, instead of that most critics like.
Surely, this movie will not bring you much thinking. However, I think it is a stylish Scientific thriller. And that's enough. Based on H. G. Wells' famous masterpiece 'War of the Worlds', this movie provided a scene of outer-space intrusion quite different from 'Alien' or 'Independent Day'. From the scene of the street, the panic crowd and burning crash site, we can well regard Steven Spielberg as a detail-focused director. There are horrible explosions in the movie, but he doesn't use these to blind you, you can also notice many subtle details that make the movie more realistic. This is what previous 'space intruder' movies couldn't provide.
Spielberg also used many settings borrowed from other SF works. The pilot of alien killing machine is surrounded by red-orange liquid, sounds like Neon Genesis Evangelion; the blood thirst aliens are like from 'ID4' and 'Starship Troopers'; and you cannot forget Tim Robbins, his role is planning digging a tunnel to the subway and raise a resisting army, reminding us of 'Shawshank's redemption'.
There are a few paradoxes. One is how the aliens put their machines on the earth. Ray (Tom Cruise) and other people say they were buried underground even before human emerged. Then how can the alien tolerate using so old devices? How can they exist for over a million years? Therefore I tend to believe those vehicles are compressed under extremely high pressure and they grow back to normal size when they come out of the ground (some kind of memory alloy, maybe).
The other is why they are defeated? H. G. Wells may failed to think out a better way to defeat them, so he let them all get killed by Terran virus. But how can we believe such an alien army designed for intruding other planets do not have any immune measure against viruses they may encounter? One explanation may be that it is their first time marching to another planet than their home, and they failed to get antibodies from human blood in time. Any way, I like the ending, which do not employ so much human-pride and nobody else would think out except Wells.

Open-ocean productivity is generally less than 100 g C/m^2/year, but upwellings and continental shelf areas may be two to three times as productive.
Coral reefs are closed nutrient systems that maintain high rates of productivity under oligotrophic conditions. Under eutrophic conditions they may be outcompeted by other organisms like algae and zooplanktons.
Water bodies can be vertically thermally stratified into epilimnion, thermocline and hypolimnion.
Old lakes are lost through geological factors and hydrarch succession, and new lakes are formed by glaciers, rivers, chemical dissolution, and volcano activity.
Different communities of aquatic life will be found according to the nutrient levels and temperature and oxygen profiles of lakes.

Natural selection determines that all predators are coward; the brave go extinct.
Predators forage optimally by expending the least amount of energy necessary to achieve fitness and will switch prey items if necessary.
Predator avoidance is the best defence against predation.
Predation can be an important factor in the maintenance of biodiversity because it prevents competition exclusion.
When explaining Batesian mimicry, the author gives the example of eastern tiger swallowtail. It is usually yellow. But when poisonous pipevine swallowtails are abundant, the female eastern tiger swallowtails mimic them. Is the gene of eastern tiger swallowtails determine that they change their look when adequate? How is this mechanism evolved?

Conservation efforts must prioritise the well-being of local populations.
Natural populations seldom reach carrying capacity and are continually cut back by density-independent factors.
Organisms evolve to occupy a tightly defined niche. Only one species occupies a niche in one place at one time. Niche will decide the morphology of the organism. Unrelated species occupying similar niches are driven by natural selection to evolve similar traits.

Exploitation efficiency of decomposers approaches 100%.
The largest energy flow through an ecosystem is through the decompositional pathway.
Allocation of energy changes with maturity. Immature stages invest in growth, mature stages increase investment in reproduction.
[Ecology] Summary of 'Ecology of a Changing Planet', Chapter 7
There are two types of reproduction: asexual and sexual. Asexual reproduction can produce the exact clones of the parent. Compared to sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction doesn't need extra energy to demonstrate attraction, or fight for the right of breeding. However, 97% of organisms use sexual reproduction, because it brings more variations in genotypes and more possibility of producing 'superfit' offspring. In relatively constant circumstances, sexual reproduction is preferred; while in frequently changing circumstances, asexual reproduction often outcompete.
Males can offset reproductive costs by increasing the survirorship of the young.
The reason why there are only 2 sexes is that if there are more than one sex that cannot give birth to the offspring, more energy will be wasted.
Animals will have the optimal number of young to achieve an ecological fitness of 1. In energy allocation and surviving strategies, there are two types: opportunists (r-strategy) tend to be short-lived, have small bodies, and have many young, e.g. dandelions; competitors tend to be long-lived, have large bodies, and have few young, e.g. large mammals.

Biodiversity is assessed at the landscape, species, population and genetic level. The strongest pattern in biodiversity is a decline in species diversity from equator to pole. This may be due to history: first angiosperms originated in tropical regions, productivity, habitat structure, stronger specialisation.
Most species are relatively rare with small to moderate geographic ranges, but are locally common where conditions are optimal. A common species is not "better", or even better adapted than a rare species.
Conserving biodiversity is tightly tied to conserving tropical ecosystems.

The greatest variable in tropical climate is precipitation caused by the migration of the intertropical convergence zone and Hadley cells.

An ecosystem includes both biotic and abiotic processes of a region. All ecosystems are affected by those that surround them. Small ecosystems are nested in larger ecosystems.
Most nutrient uptake by plants is from the upper 3cm of the soil.
The speed of nutrient cycling lies at the heart of agricultural and forest productivity. Temperature, moisture and soil conditions decide the speed of nutrient cycling.
Ecosystem functions are the natural services that the ecosystem provides to neighbouring ecosystems and to the organisms that live within it. Ecosystem values are the uses, or worth, that humans ascribe to an ecosystem.
[Ecology] Summary of 'Ecology of a Changing Planet', Chapter 6
Every organism needs energy for successful reproduction.
C4 plants have a more powerful chemical pump to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. C4 can gain enough CO2 in less time than C3 plants, hence it's more suitable for dry, hot conditions.
Either using CH2O to generate energy or build the plant body needs oxygen equal to generated in photosynthesis. Therefore, it's a common fallacy that we will asphyxiate if we get rid of all green plants. In fact without plant we will starve before asphyxiate.
If pasture is to be maintained in a healthy state for domestic cattle, the exploitation efficiency should not exceed 30% to 45%.

[Academic] Unfinished Business
Today I gave a talk to my mentor of graduation essay. Prof. Liu is very interested in the method I used in my thesis and she wanted a systematic explanation of the whole process.
Besides, she thinks that my method is creative and wants me writing an article and publishing it in domestic kernel journal. This plan is attractive and exciting. The only problem is that I don't know whether my idea is really so original and valuable.
Well, here is the chance, so just do it.

[Ecology] Summary of ‘Ecology of a Changing Planet’, Chapter 2
This afternoon I spent about 4.5 hours in a coffee shop reading this book. I was very dizzy but knowing that sleep when sitting is not good for your heart and brain so I just tried every effort to keep myself awake.
The title of this chapter is 'Chance, Change and Evolution'. it discusses the lifecycle of a species: evolution, survival, and extinction. Evolution here is forming a new species, when the genetic change is profound enough. The definition of 'species' is that the population is reproductively isolated.
Chance events play important parts in evolution.
Life formed in primitive oceans. The organic molecule's forming from inorganic materials is a small-probability event but it will occur giving enough reaction chances. The early life utilize sulfuret and energy from sun or earth to produce CH_2O.
There has been much more life forms in certain periods than today, for example, Cambrian. Many species extincted in the past. In fact, extinction is part of the history of life on the earth. Human is *not* the most advanced form of life. We are just lucky enough to survive. And we are just a twig of the species bush.
The life of a species may be from 4 million to 22 million years. Every species will extinct, sooner or later. In the past, it's meteroids' impact accelarating this process. Now it's human doing the same job.

2K Pass
总结:税单和工资单非必须;
VO 对二签没有歧视;
钱的准备要充足一些;

[Ecology] Summary of ‘Ecology of a Changing Planet’, Chapter 1
Things that I already know are omitted.
Ecology is a science concerning how nature worked. Environmentalism is just a concern. The environmentalists' idea may be drawn on scientific data, but also may be based on emotional appeal or on ethical or moral criteria. There are environmental science, too, which studies the influence of human actions on natural processes.
Natural selection is the mechanism that determines which lineage leaves the most descendents. At the same time it is the loss of all members from a population other than those with optimal genotypes. Those lineages with traits best biological programmed will have better chance to leave more descendents. The parents are successful in this therefore new generation too different from the parents may not be so successful. Natural selection, contrast to people's assumption, don't encourage mutant but heredity.
In Further Readings, maybe I can find Grand(2000).
See http://www.prenhall.com/bush for relating online resources.

Vagrant
It was 12:00 at noon. I was in Tsinghua University's tenth mess hall waiting for one of my friends, who needs to share the fee card with me. I feel reluctant. I should have been here half an hour earlier and there will be less people. If I just use my own card, I will just have my lunch alone. Yeah, why not? I can choose the time and place for any of my meals. Suddenly I find out a bit about why I can't be with my ex-girlfriend for a long enough time. I am a vagrant. I want to arrange my time myself. I don't want to wait for someone before I want to do something. Nor do I want anybody telling me "it's time for this" or "it's time for that" against my own decision and habitats. Another people having every meal with me will soon or later make me mad. I have too much of my own business. Don't tell me someone will change this. It will only change when I finally learn to be still one day. Not in the predictable future. I am glad that I didn't run into some people's lives before. They will not be hurt by me and my vagrant character now. Sometimes I do feel alone. But at such times what I need is a spiritual companion more than one who eats with me. I don't like love and girlfriend being brought down to physical level.

History is repeating itself
Today I read an article in a magazine called Nanfang News Weekly. It is a comment on the founder of blogchina.com, Fang Xindong. The article mentioned how Fang decided to start blogchina.
A few Years ago Fang wrote several articles on Micro$oft's monopolization over the OS market. Micro$oft's media department was powerful enough to control many portal websites and they deleted Fang's post at once. Fang was very angry and he began to look for a media that can't be controlled by large firms like MS. Then he found blog and started blogchina.com.
About 3 years later, I also find that my blog entry concerning censorship is deleted on blogchina.com, so I abandoned that blog and started this one. Today when I read this I feel history is tragically repeating itself. blogchina.com now is also a tool of censorship and filtering.

Some unpleasant feeling brought by CAU’s publication
On the roof top we haven't got much to read. Today I picked up a magazine edited by China Agriculture University's mountaineering team. It has a lot of articles. Most are about their May day holiday.
They went to Mount Sigu'niang (the Four Ladies) in Sichuan province and Xiaowutai Mountain in Hebei province. A female team member who went to Sigu'niang described her experience of falling on a snow slope and (I guess) hypothermia. She talked with no sign of fear or regret.
There is also an interview to their most experienced team member, called Asan. Asan was asked if he is afraid about death. But he just said death is nothing special. He even asked: "who should be afraid of death?" Geez, I don't want to climb any mountain with such daredevil. As one who has climbed a few snow mountains he should know there are something to fear.
The principle of CAU, famed Professor Chen Zhangliang is very supportive to the mountaineering team. But I think this has some negative effects to their development. They may get too aggressive. In the magazine they even mentioned that next year they will begin preparing for climbing Mt. Everest. This could be very dangerous for a team established in 2003 and lack experienced climber.

Before you decide to have an affair, part II
And if you think you have met the companion of your life, it is worthy to drop the things you are doing to be his/her company. They are special because if you don't pay enough attention to them you will never complete yourself and you will lose them.
But how do we identify such particular person from other people? We may feel happy when we are with someone. But it's not enough, yet. You feel safe, easy and at peace when you are with such person. You know without them you will not be complete. Do remember this is different from the feeling that you don't want to leave them.

Before you decide to have an affair
Yesterday Palo invited Vstarloss and I to a dinner. After that when we walk back we talked about celibate. Vstarloss says he may one day give up this. But Palo says that he won't as long as there is something for him to do. One won't feel alone when he's doing something he thinks interest.
I think Palo's words make sense. You have to invest a lot of time when you are in an affair. If you have something else to do, especially when you are interested in that, the time you invested in love affairs will make you feel painful.
I have to stop here because my friends are calling me for a dinner.
Continue next time.

Coming back from Tibet
Again I am in hot, humid Beijing. Again I am busy preparing visa application. The journey to Tibet may just mean little to me now. However, allowed some time, it may finally become one essential part in my life. I can't deny that in this very journey I decided that I will go on climbing. The Seven Summits? The 14 8000ms? They are not that far as before.
My blog in blog-city.com is to be deleted. Let it be. To make one good blog is enough.
The University of Edinburgh just give me offer today. Too late, geez, or I will surely accept it without any hesitate.

[tusea,kekao] One night before leaving
Right now, only three of the exploration team are left in the campus. Avalier, however and I. The rest have already get on the train to Xining. Right now they may be talking about the journey ahead. We are delayed by different causes. Therefore we are starting off tomorrow.
To me, this time going away is different from all times before. I am graduating this year, which means I won't come back to my dorm and see my classmates for very long time. As the time of departure draws near, the feeling becomes stronger and stronger.
There will always be new horizons. However, saying goodbye to something you have long had always makes one a bit sad.
I am in such a dilemma. I kept thinking of my teammates and I want to see them ASAP. At the same time I know that after tomorrow, I won't be a student of my university. I will become alumni.
I managed to tackle all matters needed for graduation this afternoon. When I finished I just feel so weird and exhausted. Well, maybe leaving the class earlier is better for me. The torment will be less.

[Academic] Thesis defenced
Yesterday I managed to defence my thesis, which means my four year undergraduate study is drawing to an end. The day before I had a road test. Fortunately, I found a lot of problems in the pretest, which I paid a lot of attention in the formal defence.
LaTeX Beamer is still the most convenient and automatic slide maker. Though there are a few .ppts looking better than my beamer slide, I believe that I paid far less time in this.
My presentation was fluent. Teachers didn't raise any challenging question. I am sure that I will get a score above 85.
However, my thesis has some format problems and I have to modify it.

[Academic,Geek] GIS tool under Linux (and other) platform
There is an update notice on freshmeat.net, of a software called GeoTools, which can utilize GIS data from many different sources and in many formats. It says on the freshmeat page:
This could be especially useful for me. Another reason of rejecting Windoze. Maybe try it later.
GeoTools is a GIS toolkit that is used for OGC-based projects via GeoAPI interfaces. It includes two great SLD based renderers and tools for raster access and reprojection as well as plugins for Shapefile, ArcGrid, ArcSDE, Postgis, OracleSpatial, MySQL, and many more.

[Academic] Using ’scientific’ language
My thesis would need radical modification because the language I used in writing is very unformal.
In some American and European theses we can often see people use word "we" and "our", but in a Chinese thesis these two words are almost forbidden. You should not use "I think" "it is supposed" or "we believe" either.
When organizing your article you should remember that every paragraph, even every sentence should contain some opinions or facts, and no repeat is allowed. Your thesis can be short, as long as it gives valuable information. If it is too long and dull, then it is trash.

A hard day’s night

[tusea,kekao] Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday…
Today I give team members another task: find articles on four aspects; try to know more about the project before we set off. I hope everyone be willing enough to pay their efforts to the research.
Wednesday, we will make sure if our suits are fit.
Friday, final check before the scouts set off. Last discussion (maybe) before the journey starts.
Sunday, last time preparation meeting.
And on next Monday we will be going to Tibet!

[tusea, kekao] The arrangement of grouping and interview
It again took us over three hours to discuss about the arrangement of interview. Our main consideration is that we should make every member of the team active in the whole exploration, so we have to let them think of research topics themselves. But, if everyone think over his topic, there will be no one working for other people's topic.
The solution is as follows: team members are grouped by different interview places (interviewees); all team members are required to write an article from a specified aspect which is not told until the end of the exploration. So they would do their best to collect materials for his article and share them with others. The leader of the project would notice what topic is necessary and assign them to team members. All team members can write some proses on anything they find interesting.
In the evening suantou reminded us that we should let the team fellows do more jobs and think more, which I think, is what we are fighting for.

[tusea, kekao] The organisation of interview, record, analysis and final report
Now we have two topics, 14 people and a few sorts of interviewees. The method for interviewing and writing reports must be detailed.
The four interviewing groups will each be led by a member who is more familiar to the research goal, and go to different interviewees. One member in the group will be in charge of material recording. Other members will be his aid. The record is linear, as the questions and answers come out. Both Q & A should be recorded.
Quality Control in interviewing: (need more discussion)
Archiving interview log: When get back to the lodge, each group tidy up their logs, find what is left and eliminate paradoxes. Then they should give the tidy log to the team's recorder, with the information of interviewer/interviewee, time and place of the interview, and keywords for reference. Later in the team meeting, each group will have one representative tell others about their interview, especially interesting problems found or solved. Team recorder should have clear record of the meeting.
After returning to Beijing, team recorder should establish a database of all interview logs and materials we found. All entries should be able to reference by keywords, interviewee and time/place.
Composing final report: Team members are assigned to an article from a certain aspect of the research topic. Who is in charge of the topic should write an overview of the topic. In the interview team members should gradually find what interests them most and make a choice of aspects. Some proses can be written when team members are at home.

[tusea,kekao] Our evil plan :p
We are now collecting topics from team members. However, we have in fact decided our main research topics. Tomorrow we will discuss about how to reject all these topics except the two we chose.
Well, the fact is that our team members all submitted their ideas without thinking over the schedule and difficulties in the exploration. Many topics are not practical or too complex. Therefore our only choice is to terminate them and stop our teammates from throwing too much energy in them. I know this sounds like devil's chicanery. You think for yourself.
We asked team members to submit their ideas so that they can take more active parts in the exploration. This idea is simply great. But next time we may need to do this work earlier, e.g. before the list is decided.
Tomorrow we will have further discussion on the choice of the topic and persuasion of team members. In the evening I may face very hot debate. I also need to make more detailed interview plan for the two topics decided.

[MGS] Some infomation concerning MGS 4 poster
On the net there are some versions of new MGS 4 poster. From the poster we can see eight characters. According to IGN.com, most of them are almost surely returning characters such as Vamp, Meryl and Ocelot. Some characters' identities remain mystic. There are characters looks like Big Boss, Naomi Hunter and Raiden, we just don't know whether they are really who they are supposed to be, nor how they play their part in new MGS.
From the poster we can see other elements. The circles with a short stick indicating direction may refer to soldiers in CQB or something else. Some concepts of Metal Gear Acid may also be used in MGS 4, just like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy XII.

[tusea,kekao] New progress
The progress of the preparation seems to be going in a spiral path. The same questions are discussed again and again. Each time we finished discussion about an old question we always have new ideas and solve problems that are ignored before.
Today the situation is similar. Again we talked about how to choose research topics and make everyone in the team participate in the academic work. We find that we all have some different ideas with the other two. We tried to make ourselves clear and the method of our research seems now more clear too. In Beijing, after we decided the research topic, team members will be asked to prepare questions from different subjects' view. When in Tibet, several team members who are good at organising interviews will lead other members to different interviewees' place and ask questions from their particular aspect (economic, culture, ecology, etc.).
In this case, the consistence and continuance of interview record is especially important. In my opinion, when preparing the final report, all recorded materials should be organised by research topics and different subjects. This should be discussed.
Translators could be problem. We need at least three of them to complete interviews in limited time. However, this is not very difficult problem, I think.

[tusea, kekao] Some ideas about literature searching and report
The topic of the report: the history, variation and challenges of Tibet culture.
The topic of research: don't have good ideas yet. The topic must be about the relationship between railway (traffic) and culture. Maybe I shall read some articles about this relationship.
Doing search, I find that term "culture" is a word that covers too vast while contains very abstract concept.
To measure the impact that brought to Tibet culture by railway, I think a way is to talk with those railway workers, mainly Tibetan workers, some Han workers as a complement. A better way is to talk to teachers and their pupils, then try to identify change in their concept and opinions.

[tusea,kekao] Grouping team members
In order to make all team members mobilised, we will ask them to do some literature searching and write a review or report on what they find and read.
Now we have 4 subjects, one group (led by endboxer) will search literature focusing on economy, especially on stock raising, the second group (led by wenmang) will try to find reports on Tibet stock farmer's situation, the third group will be led by me, and will focus on education, science and culture. Two people will also need to find more backgrounds of the railway.
In the next phase, we will have a second time grouping, which will be based on the research topics we choose.
And in the exploration, members of different groups will be mixed in order that when they go to different samples, all questions concerning all 3 subjects can be asked and recorded.
Today after the group is formed, I will ask members of different groups do these things: find literature, try to raise new ideas about the researching topics, make a plan about who should be visited and by what means can we do the investigation.

[tusea,kekao] Last night’s discussion
Last night the exploration team had its first gathering. We again introduced ourselves to the team. Various jobs are assigned respectively to team members.
Later we had a small running drill. After that endboxer, wenmang and I had a discussion on the practise of the exploration.
As we have decided before, this year's new survey will not be like before. We will not just ask the same questions to everyone and get some meaningless statistic data. What we want is the *fact*. Firstly, we will limit our goal to a very small matter, then we will ask different people concerning this matter. They have different stands and views, so at last we can have a complex view of this matter and understand it better. This is like depth investigation in journalism. You can refer to National Geographic to get an idea of this kind of survey.
The final report will not only include survey result in a formal format, but also detailed stories about the object we discussed.

[Academic] Finalizing my thesis
I have finally come to the result and conclusion part of my thesis. Right now I am trying to assess the region's ecosystem health. I wish I have included more indicators concerning human health earlier. But there is no time for such analysis and discussion.
I should put such consideration in next time I do research on ecosystem health/safety.

[Academic] Methods of assessing regional ecosystem health (II)
A proposed framework for developing indicators of ecosystem health
This article from SpringerLink give a few principles you must consider when you are assessing regional ecosystem health.
This article provided an idea that using some key species as the indicator of region ecosystem health. However, I think it is difficult to apply this method to Fengtai and Fangshan district in my research. I know too little about species and biodiversity in this area and lack knowledge of historical data in this area.
Nor can I identify a key species.

- Because you are considering health, you should always consider factors concerning human health and well being in the ecosystem;
- Biogeochemical and socialeconomic factors are influencing each other;
- Different management goals determined different indicators used;

[tusea]The list is announced
Just now, at the weekly meeting of the climbing club, the list of this year's mountaineering and scientific exploration team is announced.
This moment is always sentimental and makes one excited. Seems everyone's satisfied with the result. Now it's time to get the work begin.
I will need to make a more detailed question and goal list as well as make sure the topic of the survey is submitted, discussed and correctly chosen.

[tusea, kekao]The preparation status up to date
TECSUN, a consumer electronic manufacturer in Guangdong Province has agreed to give financial support to our team.
The proposal and schedule have been worked out, they will be revised later according to our updated information.
The university's Youth League committee has picked our team as a key team, though there is little financial support.
The list of team members will be announced this Thursday (June 9th). After that the preparation will fully start.
Some research topics are to be submitted by some team members.
As a graduating student, I will need to sell out all the stuffs in my dorm before the departure. The certification will be issued on July 12th, so I need someone keep that for me.

[tusea]A dirty work’s over
The day before yesterday after 3 hours' discussion, we finished choosing this year's team members of both mountaineering and scientific exploring teams. It's fast enough. I remember that last year it took us 3 days. As before, there are people who lost the opportunity this year. To comfort them become another hard and embarrassing job.
However, this year there are less people qualified to be chosen. Fewer people took part in the training, even fewer completed it. So the choice is less painful.
The next thing to do is get down to the preparation of mountaineering and survey, full-throttle.

Dilemma
This Sunday we will have a discussion on selection of team members of this year's mountaineering team and scientific exploration team. I, as the vice president of our climbing club who don't go mountaineering, will take part in this discussion.
There is a girl, whom I wish could be in the exploration team. She provided the most foundamental idea for this year's topic. Her knowlegde on social science would surely help us. But she herself eagerly want to go mountaineering. As a member of the board, I need to make my choice: enhance the ability of my team, or support her wish?
I had struggle. However, after I knew that she did so much to take part in mountaineering, I have made my decision. I will do my best to help her enter the mountaineering team.

(Maybe) My last burdened climbing drill
It's June 1st, Children's day. Also, it's near the end of our intensive training for this year's mountaineering. Today, the subject is climbing training, ascend for 500 metres with a burden of 40kg.
I never thought it a over-heavy burden. But I worry about our fatigue. I and VstarLoss decided that we wouldn't climb too fast. It took us 84 minutes to complete the training.
After the training, first I just feel relaxed. Later when we headed to the dining hall, I remembered that this could be the last burdened climbing drill in our climbing club. Suddenly a sentimental and bittersweet feeling stroke me.
No more "Cheer up"s, no more encouraging cries! How long it would take for me to reunion with my teammates under the tall tower? Ade, bricks; ade, my friends!
But all of them are so happy! There are years to come before they leave the club. Everyone's enjoying themselves while enduring the hardest labour. This summer, some of them will be going to Nyanqen Tanglha Mountain. God bless them!
The sky's especially blue today, which makes me happy.

Ecosystem Health and Its Measurement at Landscape Scale: Toward the Next Generation of Quantitative Assessments
Seven tools and concepts can be used to assess regional ecosystem health: 1. the concept of ecosystem health; 2. innovative stochastic techniques for representing human disturbance and ecosystem response in landscapes, and the corresponding statistical tools for analyzing them; 3. representation of spatial biocomplexity; 4. innovative combination techniques of upper-echelon-based spatial scan statistic to detect, delineate, and prioritize critical study areas for evaluating and prioritizing causal factors and effects; 5. the capability of comparing and prioritizing a collection of entities in light of multiple criteria, using poset mathematics of partial order with rank frequency statistics, to provide multicriterion decision support; 6. extending data mining and visualization techniques to determine associations between geospatial patterns and ecosystem degradation at landscape scales; 7. comprehensive studies conducted on different types of regional ecosystems.
The challenge is to characterize, evaluate, and validate linkages between socioeconomic drivers, biogeochemical indicators, multiscale landscape pattern metrics, and quality of human life indicators.
Regional Vulnerability: A Conceptual Framework
It suggests that to conduct an integrated assessment on a regional ecosystem, we must use synergistic methods. Synergy is too difficult to measure now and too important to ignore. We can use vulnerablility as a middld-road means to assess health situation of a regional ecosystem.

Rock climbing today: a breakthrough
Today I finally managed to top the required rock climbing route, which means I have formally got the right to go to the expedition this summer vacation. This year's route is a bit harder than that of last years. I invested a lot of time practising. I am not so good at rockclimbing. However, I progress a little every time. Yesterday I tried 5 or 6 times but I didn't figure out how to reach the last step of the route. At last I understood but I was too exhausted to climb. Today is the test. I thought over the route last night. The whole process is very smooth. When climbing, I almost forget everything else, only the rock wall and I exist. At last when I reached the bar at the top of the rock wall, I heard claps and joyful shouts from below. I was so happy then. I have got good luck. It also have something to do with my practice.
RotS: a nice completion of the epic
My friend and I just come back from the movie. We all know well about the plot. Anakin Skywalker will finally become a Sith. The value of Star Wars Episode 3 is that it tells us the struggle of Anakin and the real intrigue of Darth Sidious, so the Epic can be complete. George Lucas must tried very hard to make the plot between Episode 3 and 4 smooth. In RotS we can see the former types of star destroyer, tie fighter and X-wing, as well as storm troopers. These all can bring any Star Wars fan a sentimental feeling. For one thing, our memories of olddies SF movies are brought back. For another thing, the age of Star Wars is gone. Maybe Lucas will betray his words and shoot another Star Wars movie, but it won't have much connection to the old ones. The movie is a exciting journey from the beginning. There are only a few slow tempo scene. They are necessary to show us how deep Anakin's love to Padme is. Still, the emotion of roles is abrupt and thin. We don't want to critisize that, because it's not the key point of the movie. The ending of Episode 3 can be among the best endings of movies. The scene in Tatooine is the best I have ever seen.

Busy living
Well, let me put out my hand and count with my fingers: my graduation thesis, my optional course essay, the science exploration preparation work, visa application.... I don't really know if I am busier than the time when I was a Junior student. But I am very sure that I can manage my time better than then.
The most important issue is that I like what I am doing. My experience in these months may bring me benefit in the rest of my life. One who is not so busy may never understand how he can do so many things at the same time. I hope one day I will become a scientist who is important in the science world. That would mean much work and a life fulfilled. So, how can I be beaten by these work at my hands now?
Some of my classmates simply do what they are asked to do. Well, I will do that part at least as well as them. Besides, I will carry out my duty, which they never have, from which they never take any pleasure.

[tusea, kekao] Mission 1: detailing topics
We are applying for some fund provided by a magazine called Nanfengchuang. They want plans that are practical and results expectable. In order to achieve this, our plan has to be modified. We will need more detailed contents about our exploration.
There are 4 aspects around Qing-Tibet railway: society, economy, culture and ecosystem. We should choose 3 -- 4 topics from these aspects. The topics should be attracting, unique and can be completed with limited time and resources.
Right now I have a topic about researchers along the railway, and one about cattle-raising industry. I also asked others in the preparation team to think about some possible topics.
I also have to read some books about social survey because I will give a lecture to all team members about it.

[MGS]MGS 4 announced!
On E3 Expo, Hideo Kojima announced new MGS title. Which will be MGS 4. On the official Metal Gear Solid Site, a new link pointing to "Kojima Productions" appeared, which mentioned "MGS 4", as well as a power-up version of MGS 3 (I know it would come) and Metal Gear Acid 2. The promotion movie of new MGS also comes out at this address: mms://wm1.streaming.ne.jp/konami2/kojimapro_e32k5_e_n4v8.asf In my last blog about new MGS, I mentioned that in new MGS there will be "no place for Hideo Kojima", well, forget about that. In the promo, Hideo changed it to "No Replacement for Hideo Kojima". Good news? At least for MGS 4. In the promo we can see Raiden and Snake fighting to seize the place for the "main character", and of course Snake won, but maybe Raiden (or someone looks like him) will also appear in the new MGS. I guess CQC would still play important role in new MGS, and there could be more drastic environment changing, which makes you "no place to hide". Hideo also played parody on Splinter Cell and Sam Fisher. He knows quite well about his enemy: XBOX 360 and UBI, huh?
